ASA middle school students are using a card game to figure out the food chain. They have to think about predator/prey relationships between living things as they play the card game. This afternoon, we had the honor of being part of Jennifer Anna Rich’s book launch weekend for her new book, “The Little Way of a Pilgrim”! She set up a whimsical fairyland forest for the children to sit in, while she told us the story of her book and then read the entire book as well. And there were even cookies! Today in art, the Grammar II class was given a photocopy of an Ethiopian icon of St. Moses and transfer paper so they could trace and familiarize themselves with the style of the icon. We would love to show you more than just this delicious apple pie, but the students ate it all too fast to get photos! Today for lunch dessert at ASA, we had apple pie in honor of “Pi Day!” (The mathematical constant pi just happens to sound like the dessert pie in English!) Here, an ASA Montessori student is matching opposites. Learning about opposites helps children describe things. It also helps children develop mathematical, observational, creative thinking, and language skills as they identify opposite characteristics.

ASA’s Montessori is working on word families! Children learn that they can read many words by just changing the first letter. This builds strong, confident readers. Word families help children to see patterns in words, including rhyming sound patterns. Children develop fluency and become more confident readers by using word patterns to increase their word recognition.

Weekly, ASA has guests come in to discuss faith issues and answer faith questions. This is on top of daily faith instruction by the teachers. Often, our guest is a priest. Today, however, we had Ioan Gheorghiu, Director of Youth & Family Ministries at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. Grammar 2 students asked him many interesting and astute questions. ASA middle school students regularly do advanced math. They often work together to go over tough math problems in a lesson. When they don’t agree on an answer, they work it out until they find the right answer (with the occasional appeal to the teacher when they need his input)!

This past week our Middle School students (and secretary 😆) had the opportunity to test out the new @apple Vision Pro with a Senior Apple Engineer! Sorting objects is a great activity for early learning! Sorting teaches children how to differentiate objects based on color, size, and type. It also helps children in their language, movement and classification development.

ASA’s Grammar 2 completed many different types of measurement challenges on Day 100 (last Wednesday). They measured journeys of 100 mm, 100 inches, 100 feet, 100 meters, and even 100 pencils! Students raced for 100 meters at the end! Measurement comes to life when you do it in a real way and not just on paper!

Last Wednesday was Day 100 at ASA. (We celebrated the 100th day of school for this year). Grammar 1 students counted balloons by 5’s to see if we really had 100. Students also shared collections of 100 things, and made Cheerio necklaces in math patterns (to 100) by skip counting. Each student also had their photo taken and “aged” so that it could be place in their special Day 100 booklets. In their booklets, they describe many things, including a list of activities they’d like to do before turning 100! #makingnumbersreal

A few of ASA’s classes made special Valentines for an assisted living facility. Two of the teachers dropped the Valentines off last evening with specific requests that seniors—who might not otherwise get a Valentine or whose families rarely visit—be treated to a Valentine from our students. Of course we had parties in the classrooms yesterday, but learning to do kind things for others is far more important.

The Pink Tower and the Brown Stair are two important sensorial materials in Montessori. The two hands-on activities help children see relationships and develop a visual understanding of objects getting incrementally thinner and thicker as well as bigger and smaller. Additionally, they help bring the abstract into the concrete in a process called “materialized abstraction.”

In ASA’s Montessori class, there is always a lot of learning going on. Students write their numbers for math, practice geometry with shape blocks, do matching activities to develop concentration and reasoning, and find landform shapes in geography! There is so much to learn!

ASA middle schoolers came over to our Grammar 1 class and taught them about Egyptian canopic jars, as well as various Egyptian symbols and burial practices. They used clay creations of their own making to demonstrate! It is great to have older students teaching younger students!

In ASA’s Montessori, the children regularly practice sorting. Sorting nurtures cognitive development. Sorting requires attention, concentration, and the ability to differentiate characteristics. It also improves fine motor skills, provides a platform for language development, and helps with problem-solving skills and pattern recognition. As far as the students are concerned, though, it’s biggest advantage is that it is fun!

Today was “Tunes Tuesday” at ASA. We all get together once a month (including parents who wish to join in) and sing fun songs to “wake up” for the day! This one is a silly song called “On Top of Spaghetti” (modeled after “On Top of Old Smokey,” but far sillier!) Singing together is fun!

ASA’s Montessori class uses many sensorial activities, including the Brown Stair manipulative. The Brown Stair activity helps visual acuity. It also teaches the concept of sequence. ASA’s Grammar 1 could not let the middle school have all the fun! We decided to mummify chickens too! While each middle schooler got their own chicken, Grammar 1 got their chickens by table group. The children had to wash their chicken, clean it with alcohol, and pack it with baking soda and salt! This week, we will change the chickens (new salt and baking soda) to help them dry out further! It should take about 70 days to get mummy chickens!

Last Thursday, ASA celebrated the New Year during Liturgy with the blessing of Vasilopita (St. Basil’s bread). In this tradition, the faithful bake a special bread (which is blessed in Liturgy) with a coin inside. The person who gets the coin in their slice is considered to have St. Basil’s blessing for the whole year! This year, ASA’s secretary, one of our Grammar 1 students, and one of our Montessori students each received the coin!

Every morning, ASA students pray together in the Nave of St. John's Greek Orthodox Church. The children, led by a middle school student (and Mrs. Blankenstein, our principal) take turns being chanters for our prayer time. (We usually have one student from each class come up front.) Practicing the prayers daily, and learning to lead others in the prayers, are important parts of ASA's goal to help parents rear up children of integrity and faithfulness.

ASA's middle school students work hard studying, but also do many hands-on projects. Here (before Christmas break), they are working on making papyrus (or a reasonable facsimile). They studied to write messages in hieroglyphics on their papyrus. (They are studying the beginning of the world to the Roman era this year.) Parent involvement is vital to the operation of ASA and keeping tuition rates as reasonable as possible. When parents enroll their children at ASA, they commit to volunteer 20 hours of their time to the school each year (10 hours for parents of half-day students).

Fundraising Coordinator

The fundraising committee manages our seasonal fundraisers and the scrip program. Our fundraisers have included fundraisers like Chinook Books, Poinsettias and hanging Flower Baskets. The scrip program is a year long program that allows families to purchase gift cards and certificates for local stores and restaurants at face value with a percentage benefiting the school. Research and oversees fundraisers (such as candy sales, dine-outs, flower baskets), touching base with individual event coordinators to make sure they understand and follow our “Fundraising Guidelines” and providing support when needed.
