What is a classical education?

“But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” —Matthew 6:33

Classical with a Heart

If you’ve heard of “classical education,” you may think immediately of academic rigor, Latin, and memorization, or perhaps the trivium. These things have their place at ASA, but the primary and crucial meaning of “classical education” for us is education that aims much higher than any test or transcript. It is education that forms and feeds the humanity of our students through that which is good, true, and beautiful—in which they will recognize Christ, the Logos and the Holy Wisdom Who is our namesake. This is the why of classical education, without which nothing else matters.

In the service of that end, we do study grammar, Latin, logic, rhetoric, math, history, science, music, art, and more. We read what are often called the “Great Books” and engage with the “Great Conversation”—the canon of texts and the great ideas therein which begin in the ancient world, were brought to fulfillment by Christianity, and are our inheritance even today: the fruit of the best of the human experience. We build an impressive transcript, but not merely for the purpose of impressing; rather, this is how we shape and form our minds, hearts, souls, and even bodies to recognize and grasp that which is good, true, and beautiful.

WISDOM

Wisdom is our goal at ASA: not just true knowledge and practical skill, but true knowledge and practical skill rightly ordered to the Good. And more even than that, our goal is true wisdom: Christ, the Wisdom of God (1 Cor 1:24).

GOODNESS

ASA students pursue the good in every endeavor, placing each in the hierarchy of goods in relation to the ultimate Good. Students will see that goodness is something real and knowable, and will strive to orient their whole being towards it.

TRUTH

ASA students strive to know truth, to orient their minds and souls to what is real. They are given real facts, real information, and real ideas, and trained in their capacity to grasp and evaluate these. More than this, though, they are trained to seek and love truth in its beauty, recognize it, and live according to it. Ultimately, they are able to know Truth as the Logos, Christ Himself.

BEAUTY

Beauty is the quality that brings the soul out of itself in love. It is often that which first pierces the blindness of our souls, elevates our minds, and allows us to see goodness and truth. ASA students are trained to love and delight in beauty as something real, not just in the subjective "eye of the beholder"--and not just in art and music, but in each and every subject. More than this, they are trained to recognize and love beauty in the Cosmos, in human life and experience, and in truth itself.

Why choose ASA?

Agia Sophia Academy provides a Christian, classical education so that students will grow through beauty, goodness, and truth in pursuit of Wisdom. Hear from some of our families below:

"It was a blessing for our family when we found out about Agia Sophia Academy. The classes are pretty small, and kids get lots of teacher's attention. Christian values helped my child to become more calm and caring about others. Teachers are amazing, and the School Board is doing a lot of work to keep everybody engaged and involved in the school's life. If you are looking for a private school consider the Academy!"

"I loved my experience at ASA! I remember forming close relationships with my teachers and friends. I was well cared for academically and spiritually."

"Agia Sophia has been a major blessing for our family. We have two kiddos in the Montessori classroom for 3 yr olds - kindergarten and they are both thriving. I am so impressed by how much our kids are learning (they are both reading and writing!) and by how much they both truly enjoy it. The teachers are amazing and truly meet each kid where they are at socially and academically. We are so thankful that we found ASA!"

"Our daughter is currently in the Montessori Program and her teachers are an absolute blessing. There are no words to explain our gratitude towards the teachers and staff at Agia Sophia. The time they put in with all the children to prepare them not only for future schooling but being kind and loving people."

"Thank you so much for welcoming our family, enriching our daughter's mind and spirit, and for sharing the love of Christ in what you do here in this community."

"We have witnessed this fine treasure and worthy ministry blossom into the fine Orthodox Institution that it is today! Agia Sophia Academy plants the seed of Orthodoxy in our youth. These fortunate children are the future of our Church and a true testament that Orthodoxy is alive in Portland. It is a blessing to have our grandsons enrolled in the school."

"Being a child of a teacher, education has always been valued highly in our family. At Agia Sophia Academy I can say with confidence that they do as well. My son has learned so much at ASA. It is an amazing environment that not only encourages learning but also establishes a deep understanding and respect for God and for Orthodoxy."

"You created a beautiful, safe, and loving environment for our children to learn."

"We are grateful for all you do for our children--above and beyond the nurturing education."

"Thank you for the love you show our children every day! We are so blessed to have you all in our lives!"

"All of the teachers & staff are a blessing to the families here. You ALL are appreciated for your talents & gifts."
